Here's some thoughts on the show from last night....
As I said the other day on here, after trying to sample a taste of the local scene here in Evansville, the idea of going to another CCW show kind of made me want to throw up, but the interest in seeing Jerry Lynn face Sabu won me over. So, when i got off work yesterday, I drove straight to downtown Evansville and went to the show. When I got there, I saw the sign saying that Sabu was a no show and that he was being replaced by Kid Kash. My brain went into computer mode and I started to calculate the options..."No Sabu....Kid Kash....that means Lynn vs Kash....Lynn=always awesome....Kash=not-so-awesome, but still in good shape and can pull off a decent match if he tries.....Lynn + Kash=could be a decent match...." So, against my better judgment, I stayed. As I waited for the show, I was thinking if I had ever seen Kid Kash in person before and I have, back at that ECW show I went to in 2000. Back then, he was still doing that goofy Kid Rock gimmick....not ALL of Paul Heyman's ideas were great! After waiting for what seemed like forever, mostly because I was bored and tired from work, the show started.
At the start of the show, they brought out Jerry Jarrett to talk a bit. Don't ask me why he was there. I guess that ever since Dixie bought out his part of TNA, he's got nothing better to do on a Wed. night.
I know I'm going to mess up some of these names, since I have no clue who some of these guys are, but here goes:
Wild Boys (Steve Bailey & Ben Jordan (I think?)) vs Damage Inc. (Buzz Dupp & J Grunge)
This match was part of the tag tournament where the winner gets to face The Rock and Roll Express later in the show. Not much to say about this one. Everyone in the match was pretty sloppy. Luckily, it was quick and there wasn't any stalling. Damage Inc. got the win.
Next, they did this whole spot where they were doing promos about how the ring announcer (some DJ guy from WKDQ) gets booed every time he comes out. Oh joy....ring announcer heel heat....that only works for Joel Gertner! Anyway, they brought out another guy, who I think was named Rick Lowe and come out to some disco Kiss music....total "groovy 1970's radio DJ guy" kinda look...too bad he didn't have a clue what was actually going on. He did inform us that JEFF Jarrett had made a speech at the start of the show. d**n, I missed him....oh well!
Noise, Booze & Tattoos (didn't catch their names) vs The Regulators (didn't catch their names either, but they had "Regulators" on the ass of their tights, so I'm guessing that was their tag team name)
Another tag tourney match. NBT came out wearing assless chaps. I mean, come on, if you're going to do an old school wrestling show, you've GOT to have at least ONE tag team come out in assless chaps....it's a rule, I think. The one guy on the team looked like a bulked up "Diehard" Dustin Lee. The Regulators come out with cap guns a-blazin'....man, do I wish I was making that up, but I'm not. I'm guessing they're the faces here since they have cap guns and some hot chick that looked like she should be in a line dancing video. The match was nothing to write home about. Again, it was quick. It ended with the hot country chick turning on one of the Regulators and hitting him in the balls and the Dustin Lee looking guy getting the pin.
Shawn Shultz vs Mitch Ryder
Another match where nothing really special happened, but Ryder did look pretty good. Ryder got the win.
Next the WKDQ DJ came back out to the ring and brought out Brian Christopher to try and find out who his mystery tag partner was going to be later in the night. I knew this was going to painful to sit through....and it was! It's pretty bad when even the old school wrestling fans sitting around started looking as if they were bored. Brian rambled and rambled and the whole thing went on forever. Then, he brought out his partner and it was Wolfie D......REALLY??? Wow....could this get any worse? Oh, here comes Jamie Dundee.....yeah, it CAN get worse! So, then basically, Dundee got Wolfie to turn on Christopher and PG-13 were back together again....and the WKDQ DJ guy is going to be their manager. The segment ended with a bunch of local guys running in to the ring and getting beat up by Dundee and D.
Jerry Lynn vs Kid Kash
Ok, finally something I can actually get behind and try to enjoy. They said that the winner of the match was going to get a world title shot later in the night, since Buddy Landell had no showed as well. Lynn came out and was his usual awesome self. Kash came out in total heel mode....and man, did he do it well. He had the crowd fired up BIG time. Of course, it was kind of funny that he always made sure the security guys were there to pull him back whenever he'd try to attack the fans....Heel Tactics 101. Once he got in the ring and they got through all the "do a move, jump out of the ring, tell the ref he pulled my hair" moves, the match was pretty darn good. Kash worked on Lynn's arm most of the match and Lynn sold it like a million bucks! In the end, Lynn got the win and that was, in my opinion, the match of the night....and the even better news was that now we were going to get another Jerry Lynn match later in the night.
Noise, Booze & Tattoos vs Damage Inc.
The hot chick that turned on The Regulators was with NBT now. The match was pretty much your standard issue Memphis tag match. Everyone looked pretty sloppy. The end came with the hot chick climbing up on the ring and showing her ass to Buzz and then throwing powder in his eyes. NBT wins and gets a show at R'n'R Express later.
Tracy Smothers, Cody Strong & J.D. Thunder vs Dutch Mantel, Tony Roberts & C.J. Popp
To be perfectly honest, I missed most of the match. Right as it was beginning and Tracy was on the mic, I saw out of the corner of my eye, Jamie Dundee come out and yell at a security guy get "Home Depot" Mike (I think that's what Ian Rotten used to call him in IWA:MS) who was taking pictures at ringside. I see him and Dundee go to the back corner and Dundee starts yelling at him so hard that his face looked to be turning purple. Next thing, Mike and "Rough Tough" Jimmy Clough (also of IWA:MS fame, who was selling stuff at a merch table) get thrown out. Anyone have any clue as to what happened there? My guess is that either they were selling something they weren't suppose to be selling or he wasn't suppose to be at ringside taking pictures. As for what I saw of the match, I did see a few massively botched moves from C.J. and Strong. Why these two yardtards are allowed within 50 feet of a wrestling ring is WAY beyond me. Just because they know how to set a ring up doesn't mean you can actually put them IN it and expect something good to happen! The ending came with Tracy, Strong and Thunder getting the win.
Xavier Cage vs Rudy Switchblade
This was for the Jr. title. It was nice to see Rudy in a singles match. I didn't know anything about him before a few months ago, but he's got some really good talent. Cage isn't one of my top favorites, but he's not that bad either. This was a pretty darn good match. Lots of back and forth action, near falls and Rudy hit Cage with some absolutely BRUTAL chest chops. Cage had a manager with him (didn't catch his name) and he got involved quite a bit. In the end, Rudy had Cage layed out in the middle of the ring with his manager on top of him and pulled off an absolutely AWESOME frog splash for the win and is the new Jr. champion. Rudy's partner, Johnny Punch (isn't that his name?) then came down to congratulate him on the win and then challenge him for the belt.
PG-13 vs Brian Christopher
PG-13 came out to "Fat Bottom Girls" by Queen. I'm guessing in the Memphis 'hood, homeboys cruise the streets, listening to some Queen music. I just have this mental picture of them with the KDQ DJ guy in a car, driving through the 'hood of Memphis, singing along, acting out and head-banging to "Bohemian Rhapsody" a'la "Wayne's World". Anyway, they played up the whole "you don't have a partner" thing with Brian. Then out came Doug Gilbert....oh, for the love of God, don't give him the mic.....oh SH*T!!!! He ended up being Christopher's partner. The match was actually a fairly decent little Memphis-style brawl. Brian and Wolfie even ended up on the stage at one point. There really wasn't all that much stalling in the match and in the end, PG-13 ran off and got counted out. At the end up the match, Christopher and Gilbert started cutting promos....oh jeez....this'll take forever....and it did. basically, Christopher ended up saying that he had always hated Gilbert's guts (who doesn't?) and turned on him and beat the crap out of him. On the way back up the ramp, he yelled "Who's the man??" and I confused everyone around me when I yelled back "NICK GAGE!!!!!" Gilbert got back on the mic and then challenged Christopher to a cage match.
Jerry Lynn vs Kevin White
Now I know who White is....he's the guy that have that "bored-me-to-tears" match with Brian Christopher at the first Legends show. Lynn came out and was still selling the injured arm. See folks, that's what makes Lynn so awesome....he tried to make things like that actually believable because pro wrestling isn't just who can pull off the most amazing moves....it's also who can take a goofball with marginal talent (such as Mr. White) and make him look like a million bucks. Lynn did that VERY well! The match was short, but in the end, Jerry Lynn got White into the cradle piledriver (which is still an awesome move, by the way!) and got the win and is the new CCW world champion! I have to admit that I marked out like a little kid at a Hulk Hogan match in 1986!
Main Event
Noise, Booze and Tattoos vs The Rock and Roll Express
By this time, it was getting close to 11, so I knew this match would be short. Little did I know it would be over before Dr. Johnny Fever (Google it!) even got through the intros! What a way to waste a tournament....by having the team that wins and gets a shot at the titles lose in about 15 seconds! Now we know why Damage Inc. didn't win the tournament. After the match, PG-13 came out and glared at The Rock 'n' Roll Express and Ricky Morton said that he knew what was next for them and then thanked everyone for coming out.
All in all, this wasn't the best show I've ever seen....not even close really. But I will say that as far as old school Memphis "rasslin'" shows go, this show was really good. The thing is that I'm not really into these kinds of shows, but for the people who are, man, they got their money's worth, that's for sure. For me personally, there were things that I really enjoyed about the show and there were things that bored me to death. Of all the shows in Evansville I've been to in the last few months, this one was the best....certainly better then that last turd-fest I went to....*cough*NFW*cough*
I plan to hop back on here either later today or this evening with some news I found out about yesterday about a show that's going to be well worth the road trip it'll take to go see it that I think certain people on this board are going to be interested in. But for now....off to work I go!
