This was Chikara's first show in Indiana and was held at place called The Lafayette Theater. The theater was a really old movie theater. It wasn't fancy, but it wasn't completely run-down either. The ring set up was a little strange. The ring was set up on the lowest level of the floor and then they had chairs set up on the next level. So, there were only chairs on one side of the ring. Here's what happened:
The Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield & "Mr Touchdown" Mark Angelosetti) vs. Arik Cannon & Darin Corbin
This was my first time seeing Dasher in person. Angelosetti is somewhat new to the Chikara roster. He plays a football player character and it fits his look perfectly. He's a kind of short, stocky guy who's solid muscle. The match was fast-paced and everyone looked great. During the match, Veronica (Archibald Peck's former valet) came out to watch Angelosetti. The story there is that she left Peck (and broke his heart) because she has a crush on Angelosetti. Anyway, she didn't do anything other than watch and reacted whenever Angelosetti would do anything. The match was full of well-done comedy spots. The best being when Corbin and Angelosetti were in the ring and Corbin was in a headlock. He tried to whip Angelosetti off but he held Corbin's tights. Cannon then threw a penalty flag and then ref PJ Drummond threw one as well. The crowd started chanting "Instant replay!" and they did the instant reply spot, which was awesome! Corbin was, as always, his awesome self at doing spots like that! Dasher then got into the match and did all of his baseball-inspired spots and then, in the end, he threw Cannon out of the ring and hit a move (I didn't write down the finishers on this show....sorry) and pinned Corbin. As far as matches full of comedy spots go, this one was darn good and everyone played their parts perfectly.
Billy Roc, Dale Patricks & Remi Wilkins vs. Jeremy Hadley, Tripp Cassidy & Big Sue Jackson
Since Billy Roc's school is located in Lafayette, I wasn't surprised they had a match that featured his students. Billy Roc was really over with the crowd and Hadley was as goofy as ever, coming out with his Roman chest guard and everything. The match was really fast-paced and guys were flying all over the place. Patricks and Cassidy seemed to really shine during all of this. They were both pulling off some big moves. In the end, Jackson and Cassidy were thrown out of the ring which left Hadley between the other three. Each of them hit him with a big move and then pinned him for the win. Later, I heard word that Sue Jackson actually broke his wrist during the match.
4-Team Elimination Match
The Young Bucks (Nick & Matt Jackson) vs. BDK (Tim Donst & Jakob Hammermeier) vs. The Batiri (Kobald & Kodama) vs. The Spectral Envoy (Ultramantis Black & Hallowicked)
Jakob came out first and did his own introduction. He's really not that great of a wrestler, but he's entertaining on the mic. Donst seems to have changed his look from being a high school wrestler to an emo kid. Envoy was the last team to come out and when they did, the fight was ON. Guys were flying all over the place. The Young Bucks seemed to kind of stay on the outside and away from everything at first. Once things kind of calmed down a bit, it came down to The Bucks really working over Kobald and hit him with a sick looking double pile driver move and pinned him. I can't remember exactly how, but next to be eliminated was UMB and Hallowicked, leaving The Young Bucks vs. BDK. As I said, Hammermeier isn't that great of a wrestler, but the guy can sure take a beating and he was taking all kinds of crazy moves from The Bucks. He was finally pinned by them and The Young Bucks scored 3 points (I'm not sure how the whole tag team point thing in Chikara works).
Sara Del Ray vs. Obariyon
Obariyon is the other part of the Batiri team. He's the slightly bigger of the two and still kind of reminds me of a cross between The Dynamite Kid and Taz back in his IWCCW/early ECW days when he was The Tazmaniac. Sara's slimmed down a bunch and looked to be in awesome shape. Compaired to the matches so far, this one was really slow-paced, but it was still great. Obariyon looked great and Del Ray looked like a million bucks, as always. In the end of the match, Del Ray had him on the top rope and Obariyon grabbed her and bit her ear. He then hit her with a wicked jumping DDT move and pinned her. After the match, Kobald and Kodama came out with a rope and started to hog-tie Del Ray. Then, Saturyne ran out to make the save. Saturyne is a masked female wrestler and is a new member of the roster (...and as a side-note, she's SUPER hot!).
Next, was intermission. They did the usual thing in which one of the wrestlers would come out and take pictures in the ring with fans. This time, they brought out the guy who's probably more over then anyone in Chikara, Mixed-Martial Archie....who's also known as Archibald Peck....or R.D. Evans....or Robert Evans....or whatever you want to call him. Apparently, he thinks he's an MMA fighter now. Whatever part he plays though, the guys is ALWAYS entertaining. I milled around up in the lobby and got Sara Del Ray to sign my "Best of" DVD. When I went back to my seat, I was watching people get in the ring to get pics with Peck and then I figured, "what the heck!" and got in line. Evans is a super-cool guy and it I have to admit my inner mark was thinking, "Wow...I'm in a wrestling ring right now!" HA HA!!!
The Colony (Fire Ant, Green Ant & Soldier Ant) vs. The Swarm (assailANT, combatANT & deviANT)
I don't follow Chikara that closely, but apparently, the story here is that The Swarm is a group of "evil ants" who have come to destroy the Colony (What did John Zandig say in his shoot interview about Quackenbush having a bug fetish???). Anyway, The Colony came out first and The Swarm attacked them from behind. The fight was ON then and things were happening so fast. Guys were flying all over the place and laying all around the ring. Green and Soldier were taken out first and then all three members of the Swarm worked over Fire Ant. The were trying to rip off his mask and tore the top of it open. Green Ant then fought back and tried to rip off combatANT's mask and tore the top of his mask as well. In the end, the Swarm was DQed when a guy who goes by the name of 17 ran in. Eddie Kingston then ran in as well and The Colony fought The Swarm away from the ring. This led to....
Eddie Kingston vs. 17
The story on this 17 guy is that he's suppose to be the "evil Mike Quackenbush" and he uses 17 forgotten wrestling holds as his finishers. Somewhere in all of this, a guy by the name of The Shard came out too. He's another member of this group that's known as Gekido. I'm not sure what evil version this Shard guy's suppose to be though. The match was short but it was hard-hitting. Whenever Kingston would get the advantage on 17, Shard would get involved. Kingston finally got sick of his and, I think, he ran him into the ring post. 17 did use some strange submission holds and Eddie really sold that his leg was hurt. In the end, Eddie hit 17 with a HUGE spinning backfist and got the pin on him. All of the Ants then fought their way back to the ring and ran off all of the members of Gekido. The whole thing was a bit of a cluster-f*ck, but it was an entertaining cluster-f*ck.
Jigsaw vs. Icarus
Icarus came out and was as creepy as ever. He's now got a weird mustache/ goatee thing happening which makes him look even creepier then he did before. Jigsaw was over, but their were some in the crowd that were booing him too. The match was really, really strong with both guys showing why they've been in the business for 10 years. Apparently, the thing is is that the winner gets a shot at Eddie Kingston's Grand Championship at Chikara's Manhattan show. As good as this match was, at the moment, I can't remember exactly how it ended, other then I know that Jigsaw won.
Main Event
2-out-of-3 Falls, Campeones de Parejas Title Match
3.0 (Shane Matthews & Scott "Jagged" Parker) (c) vs. F.I.S.T. (Chuck Taylor & Johnny Gargano)
Parker came out with his ribs taped up and was really selling them as being injured. Taylor and Gargano looked great. It was nice to see Gargano. The last time I saw him in person was at the Vex Pro Wrestling show here in Evansville back in Dec. and since then, he got hurt really bad at the Evolve show that was the last show ever in the ECW Arena. There was even talk that he might have been out of the business because of it, so it was really great to see him back because he really is one of the best in the indies right now. Early in the match, Taylor went to the back and brought out a chair. The first fall didn't last long. Matthews worked most of it (and looked great too) but once Parker got tagged in, Taylor hit him in the ribs with the chair when Gargano distracted the ref. He then pinned Parker. After that, Matthews came in like a house of fire and locked Taylor in a Boston crab and he tapped out quickly. Taylor and Gargano then double-teamed Matthews and really worked him over while Parker was on the floor, selling the injured ribs. Matthews fought hard and once Parker got back in the ring, he tried his best as well, but in the end, Taylor hit in the ribs with the chair again and ended up pinning him. And the new Campeones de Parejas is F.I.S.T.! After the match, The Bravado Brothers came out and made fun of 3.0 for losing, but Matthews ran them off.
And with that, that was the end of the show. Gavin Loudspeaker then announced that Chikara is returning to Indiana in August and is going to run a show in Indianapolis on Aug. 18th. On my way out of the theater, I saw a bunch of people I recognized. Jason V (from IWAU) was talking to Arik Cannon in the lobby. As I made my way out, wrestlers where hanging out with fans. I didn't even see him, but seemingly out of nowhere, Billy Roc says to me, "Hey, thanks for coming out." and shakes my hand and Dale Patricks does the same. All in all, I don't think I enjoyed this show quite as much as the show in Tennessee I saw last October. However, this was another really fun show. As I said before, I can't say I'm the biggest Chikara fan in the world, but seeing their shows live is always a great experience.
