He's still at large at the moment, but he's been officially charged with second degree robbery. abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/crime&id=7872029It's been a crazy week of following this story. The picture of him first started popping up on the CZW boards last week and right away, I knew it was him. Just three weeks ago, I was within arm's reach of the guy at the Arena in Philly. I wouldn't say that I actually "knew him", but what little I was around him, he is an interesting person, to say the least. He's always VERY intense...to the point that you have to wonder if he's playing a wrestling character or if he actually is as crazy as he acts in the ring. The last time I had any interaction with him was at Tournament of Death back in June. Before they opened the area where the ring was set up, I was over at the merch area spending too much money. I had a whole arm-load of stuff and took it all back to my car. Gage was hanging out with some people in the car parked next to mine. He was sitting in a lawn chair between the two cars and smoking a fat joint. He was trashed out of his mind. He was just sitting there, staring off into space. I thought, "Ok....well....I think I'll leave Mr. Gage alone." After the show, he was hanging around over near the backstage area. I went up to him and shook his hand and he grunted out, "Hey, thanks for coming, man!" He then looked to this guy next to me and started acting as though he was going to start a fight with him, getting in his face and everything. He then broke character and started laughing and hugged the guy. Like I said, you just never really knew if he was "in character" or not, but when he wasn't, he seemed like an alright guy. As a wrestler, he's one of those guys that people either enjoy watching or can't stand, and I can understand each side of that viewpoint. The first time I ever saw him was when I got the DVD of the Nick Mondo documentary and saw parts of the no-rope barbed wire match Mondo and Gage had in the rain. That was another one of those matches that got me hooked on the whole "modern deathmatch" scene. In same ways, Gage always reminded me of Necro Butcher, only Necro can actually work a "normal" match and Gage's non-deathmatch matches suck. But like Necro, it's Gage's way of making things look "real" that I always enjoyed. The matches that I saw in person between him and Thumbtack Jack were some of the most brutal matches I've ever seen. The other thing I enjoyed about seeing him in person was the fact that he was by far the most over guy in CZW. Whenever his matches would come up and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" would hit, The Arena (or DJ Hyde's field) would just go absolutely ELECTRIC!!! It was unreal how over that guy was to the Philly fans. Like Jay said, the guy's obviously nuts but there's got to be more to this story then he robbed a bank simply for the money. He didn't even try to hide his face (even though he does every time he comes out to a wrestling ring) and he only got away with $3000. It'll be interesting to see where things go from here.

Just as an update, Gage has turned himself in. I think it goes without saying that it'll be a while before he sees the inside of a wrestling ring again (if ever), but at least all of this has ended peacefully and I hope that he can get the help that he obviously needs.
