Well, I'm not so sure about the rest of the card, but the JC vs. Fear match has me interested. So, I might try to make it to the show tonight. Also, JP was one of my favorite local guys at the VIP shows, so it'll be interesting to see him again.

I made (and survived) my first CCW show and it was....interesting, to say the least. In all honesty, it wasn't as bad as I expect. Granted, other than the hardcore match, my expectations were extremely low. I could write a whole book about the crowd and all about Evansville wrestling in general, but we've all been complaining about that so much that it's not even worth bothering. I will say though that I think I somehow ended up sitting in the redneck daycare section.
Anyway, here's some thoughts on the matches:
Popp vs Hodge: Um...well, the less said the better.
Cage vs Walker: I had heard so much about Cage, but this was the first time I'd seen him. He has a good look and wasn't too bad. He spent a bit too much time "heeling it up", but that's what goes over in Evansville. Walker was okay, but nothing special. Decent match.
LT and Strong vs. JP and Jay: Like Cage, I had heard a lot about LT and he's a pretty good heel, which again, goes over well with a crowd like that. Jay was small, really small. It was nice to see JP again, since I think he's one of the best local guys I've seen. However, he was hardly even in the match. The majority of the it was LT and Strong working over Jay and doing all the standard issue heel tactics, like causing JP to try to enter the ring and the ref holding him back while they double-teamed Jay....Rock and Roll Express: circa 1985. The end came when Cage pulled JP off the ring apron and they brawled to the back. I would have enjoyed the match if JP had been in it more.
El Lobo vs Dragon: I don't know where they found these guys, but at least they were actually Spanish. I was expecting at least one of them to be paler than Brian Danielson, with blonde hair sticking out of the back of his mask. Both were masked men and Lobo looked to be an older guy. When Dragon came out, he did a flip plancha off the stage which was pretty cool. Once they got in the ring, they were both doing all the standard Lucha moves. The funniest moment of the entire night was when Dragon yelled "HEY!!" at a guy down the row from me who was playing with his cell phone. When the guy looked up, Dragon said (in a perfect, Looney Tune-esque Spanish accent), "No phone! Watch match!" Overall, they weren't too bad, but certainly not great. Dragon pulled off some good moves, but Lobo was really slow...slow, for Lucha Libre anyway. At one point, they did the slowest 'rana I've ever seen. I was expecting (and hoping for) some high-flying moves to the floor, but there wasn't any.
Dundee vs Ryder: Dundee came out in his old JC Ice get-up...pure white rapper guy: circa 1989. There's something kind of sad about seeing a guy his age in a goofy, over-sized hat and jean shorts with fake spray painted words on them, but oh well. He cut a promo about the last match him and Ryder had and the weird thing was his voice sounds EXACTLY like Ryder's. The whole match was all Dundee. Ryder didn't get any offense at all. At least it was a short match.
JC vs. Fear: This match was the whole reason I went and it delivered. The weapons were a barbed-wire board and chairs all over the ring....one wrapped in barbed-wire. When JC came out, he brought two light tube bundles with him. Fear cut a promo about how JC was like a brother to him and he wasn't going to fight him. JC attacked him and the fight was on. The light tubes were broken, chairs were swung, JC was thrown around on the outside of the ring and then thrown through the barb wire board. The ending of the match was stupid though....a double DQ for punching the ref?? In a hardcore match?? REALLY??? I guess the point of that was so they could set up a rematch next week, which they did. JC cut a promo and even mentioned the hardcore title, so my guess is this is going to lead to him being added to the Fear vs Pondo match on Feb. 3rd. Part of the entertainment of this match for me was watching people's reaction to the hardcore stuff. Considering that the last live match I had seen before last night was Danny Havoc vs Sami Callihan at Cage of Death, this was hardcore-lite, but it was still a brutal match and I enjoyed it. Getting to see JC work a match in person was cool and he was in great shape and didn't seem to have lost his step at all. I heard him talking to some people before the show and he seems to be in great spirits and happy to be back in wrestling. Seeing him last night only adds to my anticipation to see him in a match against Thumbtack Jack, which I hope will happen at Tournament of Death this year. When I got home last night, I found out that JC's booked to face Pondo at the next IWA:East Coast show in March, which should be great.
Anyway, overall, it was a decent show, not great, but not as bad as I was expecting. The JC match was worth the money for me and I'm considering going to the show next week to see him against Fear again.

'Dweller....I have said it time after time.....you are the man! Thank you for your two cents. It's nice to know there are other fans ....let me rephrase that.... it's nice to know another fan that is on the same page as me. The only thing ccw has going for it is the hardcore...sadly enough considering the history of the coliseum....it's a shame the wrestling is shi.tty. I LMAO when you said Jamie dundee came out in the JC Ice get up....last week he was wearing the team 2000 gear!

Thanks Morris. I guess when I try to write about something that means something to me, I get long-winded...as you and Ike know!
Anyway, yeah, the JC Ice part was pretty funny. What made it even funnier is he came out to a Three Doors Down song. I guess someone couldn't find "Ice Ice Baby" on their I-pod. Very odd moment, that's for sure. I've said on other boards that I'm a self-professed "blood mark" or "vampire" or whatever you want to call me for enjoying hardcore matches, but I enjoy them. Not because I have a sick desire to watch people destroy their bodies, it's just that if someone's willing to do that kind of stuff, I'm willing to watch and enjoy it. Plus, when I was a kid and first getting into wrestling, I'd see pictures in magazines of guys like Abdullah the Butcher and Brusier Brody and I couldn't believe what those guys were willing to do to themselves. I got that same feeling the first time I saw ECW (the real ECW, not the non-"Entertainment" version). But there's a fine line because the guys who do those sort of matches that I enjoy the most are guys who are actually trained and can actually wrestle. That's why I wanted to see JC Bailey's match. The point of me saying that is that even though I enjoy that kind of stuff, I still enjoy a good high-flying match or a good "strong style" match as well. So, a nice balance of all of those kinds of matches is, in my opinion, what makes for a good wrestling show. It would be nice if there was a way to get "bigger name" guys to work with younger, local talent...guys on the level of a Chris Hero or a Claudio Castagnoli to work "strong style" or guys like Ricochet or pretty much anyone from Chikara's roster to work high-flying matches. But the two things that make it so that'll never happen are 1) the cost of bringing those guys in and 2) the fact that the typical Evansville wrestling "fan" wouldn't even care. I could just imagine someone like Hallowicked pulling off some amazing somersault flip maneuver over the top rope and instead of showing respect for the talent it takes to do that, people would just be yelling "You suck!", if he was the "heel" of the match. But, that's how the typical fan is here in Evansville, and the mid-west in general. But hey, if someone enjoys watching John Cena matches and getting excited to know that Bob Barker and Mike Tyson are going to be on Raw, that's cool, whatever. I'd probably do the same thing if I wasn't so busy planning out my next trip to Philly....which I'm already doing!

You make some valid points, CaveDweller. Although, I don't necessarily agree that most Evansville wrestling fans (namely Coliseum fans) automatically boo the heel or cheer the baby when they go to shows.
I believe, in essence, the real reason many Evansville fans don't mark for a guy like Hallowicked is one of the same reasons many didn't turnout at the IWA shows with Danielson, Joe, AJ, etc. on the card. Sure, no doubt, lack of promotion was one. However, many Evansville fans as well as casual fans across the nation feel the need to connect to a personality or character to generate a reaction. You can have great wrestlers on a card, wrestlers that can work like a mfer, but if a fan doesn't connect with them personally from their charisma, gimmick, etc. the fans don't care if they peform an arm bar, xploder suplex or a senton off the top of a cage. An abundance of vanilla personalities, poor mic work (to get over) - a result of poor/no training, the lack of territories for wrestlers to work night after night to hone their skills, and very few weekly local wrestling programming for wrestlers to showcase their talent to get over with fans all contribute to the problem.

First of all, thanks to Cavedweller for the review. Keep us posted on when your planning on heading back and maybe you can sit in the land of the o-boys. With JC on the card, its always worth the 10 bucks. I know you have seen some crazy stuff up in CZW, but let me tell ya, JC used to tear it up in CCW on a weekly basis. Ive seen him and Necro/Pondo/Corp kill each other. Especially him and Necro. Some of the hardcore stuff they have done in CCW is legendary. JC, IMO, is the most hardcore mofo ive ever seen. There is nothing the guy wont do. I like the old school layout of CCW. Wrestling all night, with a crazy ass hardcore match at the end. Fangz, MD Id argue your point there. The old wrestling fans simply arent willing to give these kids a chance. How can they connect to anything if they arent coming out to the shows. Whos to say Hallowicked doesnt have a great character? I mean CM Punk, Matt Sydal, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe all are great characters or they wouldnt be where they are today. The bottom line is, these old wrestling fans arent willing to open their mind and let these guys in and have a real chance to impress them. Just because they have never been on TV, these Evansville fans simply dont care about them. Look at a guy like Rob Conway. Hes no better character than any of the guys above, however, he used to be on TV. So these lack of common sense fans, think, WOW that guys a star because he used to be in WWE. That all that matters. The only reason these old USWA guys are over, is because all these fans think somehow those guys are celebs of some sort. You have to give the kids a chance. If you dont, there is no such thing as up and coming stars.

The reason is the consumer is not given a reason to come to the shows. No promotion plus no wrestler recognition = no interest. Period.
