Here's what went down on Sat. night. The crowd was a bit sparse....maybe in the 100-120 range and for most of the first half of the show, they were absolutely dead. But, things did pick up a bit as the show moved on.
Shane Strickland, Gerome "King Vu" Phillips, Hollywood Dream, Kyle Maverick def. Remi Wilkins, Tripp Cassidy, Sue Jackson, Dale Patricks
This was basically a "students showcase" match. So much was happening so quickly that I couldn't keep up. The two things I remember the most were that Sue Jackson got busted open hardway and was bleeding heavily and Phillips was an absolute beast. Once he got into the match, he pretty much destroyed everyone and got the pin on, I think, Patricks.
Aaron McCormick vs. Alex Colon
This was a "Best of the Best" qualifier match. McCormick is the former "Aaron Extreme", the really tiny guy from the DNA tag team. He came out with a female wrestler/valet who was bigger than him....or at least her boobs were bigger than him anyway. The match was pretty good with both guys pulling off some really exciting high-flying moves. Colon, who can sometimes be a bit sloppy, looked pretty good this time. At one point, McCromick hit an awesome shooting star press off the top rope onto Colon who was on the floor right in front of me. In the end, Colon got the win but things were happening so quickly that I can't remember what his actual finishing move was.
Kimber Lee vs. Nevaeh
The crowd had no clue who Lee was and didn't really seem to care much about Nevaeh either, dispute her being a "local favorite". Nevaeh looked to be in great shape. Lee, who is still basically a rookie, proved to me that she can take a heck of a beating during the 6-person match she was in at "Cage of Death". The match was decent, but nothing spectacular. Both girls did get some stiff strikes on each other. My biggest problem with this match though was the fact that Lee was calling out her spots so loudly that I could hear them....but, part of that was because the crowd was so dead silent during the match. In the end, Nevaeh got the win with, I think, some form of a roll-up.
Drake Younger vs. Greg Excellent
The storyline on this one was that DJ Hyde was putting Greg in this match as punishment but then things got twisted around so that Drake was suppose to be mad at Greg for not booking him on the final show at the ECW Arena because Greg won the rights to be the booker of that show by beating DJ at "Cage of Death"...or, something to that effect. Surprisingly enough, this match actually started off pretty good and even harder to believe, Excellent actually looked fairly decent and wasn't doing his usual comedy spots. However, that didn't last too long once he started stripping down to his Superman briefs. Admittedly, it was a "Oh God, not THIS again!" moment for me, BUT, the other effect of this was that the crowd actually came to life. However, the match went farther down the tubes once Greg charged at Drake and Drake stopped him and pulled down his pants to reveal his Superman boxers. The "silliness" factor of the match got pretty high at that point. However, towards the end, things did get a bit more serious, especially when Drake hit Greg with a very nasty Death Valley Driver on the floor. Once the match got back into the ring, Greg hit Drake with two Tiger Bomb piledrivers (or whatever that move is called) and pinned him. I hope this isn't the start of a push for Excellent, but it kinda looks that way....oh joy! After the match, Drake got on the mic and put Excellent over big time. At least the crowd was actually into the show from this point on.
Next, AR Fox came out and got on the mic and announced that his opponent for the night, Uhaa Nation wasn't there. Sad news since Fox and Nation always have matches that steal shows. Fox then said he had brought someone to replace Nation from Mexico. He then announced a name I didn't expect to hear....Samuray Del Sol!!! I was just about the only person who seemed to even know who Sol was and even though I'd never seen many of his matches before, I had heard a LOT of good things about him. So....
AR Fox vs. Samuray Del Sol
The match was absolutely "off-the-charts" good. As I sad, the crowd didn't seem to have a clue who Sol was but after a few minutes of amazing high-flying moves, they were popping HUGE for him. Both guys were pulling off some breath-taking high-flying moves all over the place.....off the top rope, over the ropes to the floor, off the top rope to the floor....you name it. Again, so much was happening so fast that I couldn't keep up, but take my word for it, it was amazing! Ha ha!! At one point, a small "This is awesome!" chant broke out. In the end, Fox got the pin, but both of these guys really turned it up and showed what they could do and got a standing ovation for it. Sol then got a "Please come back!" chant. By far, this was the match of the night and I hope to see a lot more of Sol in the future!
Tommy Dreamer vs. Sami Callihan
I remember at "Cage of Death" when DJ announced that Sami was going to be facing Dreamer in Indy....the guy sitting next to me yelled, "Yeah right....maybe Dreamer from ten years ago!" HA HA!!!! Believe it or not, the match wasn't as horrible as I was expecting. Granted, Dreamer's best years are way, WAY behind him but I have to admit that he worked harder in this match then I've seen him work probably since ECW folded. But, a lot of that credit has to go to Sami too since he has really grown to become one of those guys who seems to make anyone look good just by the fact that he seems to put so much of himself into each match he's in. The only time I've seen that NOT work was the match Sami had with AR Fox at "Cage of Death" which was actually a better match then I thought it was when I watched it on DVD. Anyway....Dreamer did all his usual old ECW spots, like putting the ring bell on Sami's crotch and hitting it, hanging Sami upside down on the turnbuckle and putting a chair over his face and then drop-kicking it and at one point, he even went to the back and came back out with a Singapore cane. The thing that struck me the most about this match was that Dreamer was taking so many huge bumps on his back, considering the fact that he's had a lot of back problems over the years. So, I have to hand it to Dreamer for that. In the end, Sami beat him down so much that he finally pinned him and got the win. In a way, I was kinda hoping for some kind of a run-in by someone like Sabu or Sandman or some other old ECW guy to kind of continue this "Sami vs. the old ECW guys" feud, but it didn't happen. Still, this was a fairly decent match for what it was.
Next, was an intermission. I spent too much on BJW DVDs! HA HA!! I also talked to AR Fox some. He was a super-nice guy! I also saw Dustin Rayz hobbling around on crutches because of that really nasty leg-break he suffered at "Cage of Death".
After the intermission, Dustin Rayz was brought out and he cut a promo about how he wanted to thank Jake Crist for being his friend when he suffered his leg injury in Philly. Crist then came out but then Dave Crist and Rickey Shane Page came out and attacked then when Page pushed Rayz over. BJ Whitmer then ran out to make the save and this lead to.....
Jake Crist & BJ Whitmer w/Dustin Rayz vs. Dave Crist & Rickey Shane Page
Everyone in this match looked awesome and they all worked well together. The biggest spots came when the Crist brothers were in the ring against each other. This was again another match were so much was happening so fast. At one point, they were brawling on the outside. Whitmer ran at Page and Page backdropped him over the guardrail. Whitmer hit the metal bleachers REALLY, REALLY hard and looked to be legit knocked out. Later, Page was backdropped over the top rope and landed VERY badly on a stack of chairs. Somehow, Rayz ended up in the ring. He then turned on Jake Crist and hit him with one of his crutches. Dave Crist then hit Jake with one of the stiffest, most wicked chairshots I've ever seen....or heard. It was downright NASTY!!!! He then pinned Jake. During all of this, Whitmer was being carried out. At one point, Brett Lauderdale (the ref) even said to one of the guys on the outside, "What's his status?" as if he was suppose to do something else in the match. The whole thing was insane but fun to watch!
CZW World Heavyweight Title match
Devon Moore (c) vs. DJ Hyde
Why this match was even happening is beyond me but before it got started, Scotty Vortekz came out and said that his opponent, Robert Anthony wasn't there so he wanted to be added to the match....and he was and the match was turned into an elimination match. Moore and Scotty teamed up on DJ and really worked him over. At one point, they had him on the outside and they did the same spot from "Cage of Death" where they were letting fans chops DJ. I didn't get to this time though....oh well! The biggest chops actually came from Scrawny Shawny and Micheal Pancoast! HA HA!!! After a while, DJ got control again and took both guys out. He then hit Moore with a HUGE lariat....AND PINNED HIM!!!!!! I was shocked because at "Cage of Death" nearly everyone was BEGGING Moore to lose the belt to someone and he didn't and now, out of nowhere, we were about to have a new champ. Typical, strange CZW booking, I guess. Anyway, after that, Scotty and DJ beat the heck out of each other until Scotty got DJ up on the top rope and somehow, hit his Blue Moon Driver (or whatever it's called) move on him and pinned him. Scotty Vortekz is the NEW CZW CHAMP!!!! As I said, I'm not sure why they did this at this show, but being so that it happened in Scotty's hometown, the crowd was going INSANE!!! All the faces from the back came out and Drake Younger and Greg Excellent held Scotty on their shoulders. So now, Scotty's going to be defending the title against Drew Gulak at the anniversary show next week. My guess is they'll probably add Devon Moore to that match somehow and Moore will end up winning the title back.
Main Event
Ultraviolent match
Danny Havoc vs. Matt Tremont
This was a re-match from their match at "Cage of Death". In that match, Tremont's foot got stuck in a bed of nails. Anyway, Tremont came out with a huge fork but there really wasn't any other weapons around at first. Both guys went at each other quickly and beat the crap out of each other. The fork was used and it wasn't long until both guys were bleeding buckets. Lots of chairs were used and both guys were brawling all around the ring. At one point, Tremont pulled out two staple guns. Danny got one of the guns away from him and being the classy fans we are, we all started handing him dollar bills to be stapled onto Tremont. I think Danny pocketed some of them....HA HA!! Anyway, at one point, Tremont ended up stapling one of the dollars onto Havoc's tongue. As the match went on, Havoc pulled out a bag from under the ring that was full of Japanese Kenzen and he spread them around the ring. They did a few spots onto the Kenzen and Tremont had one stuck into his head at one point. In the end, Havoc ended up pinning Tremont and after the match, he put him over big time and that was the end of the show.
All in all, I can't say this was the best show I've ever seen in my life, but it certainly wasn't the worst either. I think the show would have been a bit better if they had had then title match at the end. That certainly would have sent the crowd away happy, knowing that a hometown boy had won the title....especially since the ultraviolent match really didn't have that much to clean up.
Anyway, the next CZW show in Indianapolis is going to be on May 5th.
