I was kind of on the fence about going to this show since I spent almost 8 hours in Indy at the IPW/CZW shows last week and quite honestly, I was a bit burnt out on wrestling shows. But, since Olney is only a 30 minute drive from where I work, I figured "what the heck?" and went for it. Plus, I had this gut feeling that from the three matches they had announced (especially the main event), this could be something decent to see. Man, was I ever right about that one. The main event of this show turned out to be one of the best wrestling matches I've ever seen in my entire life....NO JOKE!!!!
Here's what went down:
They started off the show with announcing that there was a special ring announcer. They then brought out Cole James in a dress. I'm not sure what that was all about but the fans sure ate it up. On to the first match:
Scott Parker vs. Cash Bordin
Bordin is a young guy who looked decent...however, it's hard to look too good when you're in there with someone as horrible as Parker. Still the match was short and all in all, Parker wasn't quite as bad as I've seen him in the past....which isn't saying too much. Parker won with a sloppy full-nelson slam type move.
Oliver Cain vs. Joey O'Reily
And....we jump right into the good matches! This one was awesome! Both guys looked great and worked really well together. The action started off back and forth, but once Cain got control, O'Reily took a beating for most of the match. O'Reily kept trying to fight back, but Cain would put him back down. There were some great dives to the outside at various points. In the end, O'Reily hit a HUGE superplex off the top rope and then both guys rolled each other up and there was a double pin. I'd say that was a crap ending to a great match, BUT it does continue the feud between these two guys, so I don't really have a problem with that. All in all, a really great match.
And then, after all that awesomeness....right back to the goofiness. Cole James came back out to announce the next match but said he did have the notes for it. So then the general manager guy (Steve...something) announced that the next match was going to be a women's match. This led to...
Cole James vs. Lexxi (with Tony Flood)
Um....well, basically this Lexxi chick just pulled up James' dress and then rolled him up and pinned him. At least it was short....NEXT!!!
IWAU Title match
Matt Cage (c) vs. Shank Barzini
It's amazing how over as a face Shank is in Olney....and how over as a heel Cage is. I knew this match was going to be good and it delivered. Before the bell, Cage attacked Shank with the belt. Both guys fought hard with tons of stiff strikes and high impact moves. Both of them also looked awesome in doing it as well. It still amazes me why Shank isn't used in some of the "bigger" indy feds....but, I digress. At one point, Shank had Cage on the outside and he did a VERY nasty-looking dive through the ropes onto him and they hit HARD!!! The, Cage had Shank locked into a choke-out submission hold (not unlike the one Taz used to use back in the ECW days) but Shank fought back to his feet and then dropped Cage over the top rope. Cage then crawled under the ring and while Shank and the ref were looking for him, he came out with a brick and hit Shank over the head with it and then pinned him. After the match, Cage was on the outside, cutting a promo and Shank went INSANE and jumped over the rope onto him. It was nasty considering that Cage looked as though he wasn't ready to catch him. They did the spot with all the refs trying to break them up and one of the refs took a nasty bump against the side of the entrance way. Though I didn't care for that ending match, this was still awesome and all the brawling at the end sets up a future feud between these two. I'd love to see these two guys against each other again!
After a short intermission, D.A. Morrison came out and cut some promo about trying to get back into IWAU. This kind of went on a bit too long, but basically, they announced that at their next Sat. show in Dec. 10th, Morrison is going to have a match against Zach Gowen.
IWAU Tag Tile Match
Cody Strong & Alex Castle (filling in for Aiden Young) (c) vs. A.T. Brooks & Tony Flood (w/ Lexxi) vs. Generation Kill (Matt Maverick & Blake Reed)
Yes....Cody Strong and Matt Maverick in the same match....it was as painful as it sounds! Blake Reed is a VERY large guy who used to wear a mask and was one of the Shadow Corps. dudes. The match started off with Castle and Brooks and the two of them actually didn't look too bad together. Maverick then tagged himself in and Flood also came in. Flood didn't look too bad and pulled off some decent moves off the top rope for a guy his size. At some point, Reed got involved and he really didn't look too terrible for a big, fat guy....but once Strong got into the match, I think my brain went to sleep. At one point, everyone was in the ring and they were all hitting each other with high impact moves and Reed hit A.T. with a nasty looking sit out pile-driver move and pinned him and Maverick and Reed are the new IWAU tag champs.
IWAU Club Title Match
Brandon Walker (c) vs. Ax Atwardt
Well....if my brain didn't go to sleep watching Cody Strong, it sure did during this match. I get the feeling that I should know who Walker is, but I don't think I've ever seen him before. He's an older guy who looks to be in great shape. Ax, on the other hand, is a typical, old school, 1980's "'rassler"....out of shape and sporting a fu manchu mustache. He spent most of the match hiding a chain from the ref and "heeling it up" with the crowd. It went on....and on.....and on....and on......Zzzzzzz. In the end, Ax tried to pin Walker with his feet on the ropes but the ref saw it. Then, Walker rolled up Ax and then pinned him with his feet on the ropes....and the misery ended. If you're into old school, Memphis 'rasslin' then this was the match for you. All that kept going through my head during this was, "IT'S STILL REAL TO ME, D*MNIT!!!"
Main Event
No DQ, No Countouts
Danny Cannon vs. Christian Rose
I had a feeling this one was going to be good, but I had NO clue just HOW good! First of all, I'm digging Rose as a heel. Dude looked downright evil during his entrance. This was Cannon's first match since he left the business earlier this year and so when he came out, he got a MONSTER pop! That kid can't be more then about 4 and a half feel tall, but I think he can jump higher then about half of Chikara's roster....no joke! The match started off stiff with both guys exchanging kicks. The match had a very slow build with both guys pulling off awesome, high speed moves back and forth. They did that for so long that I started to wonder if they were even going to do anything with the "No DQ, No Countouts" thing. But then, they went to the outside and the brawl was ON!! Rose went for a Yakuza kick onto Cannon while he was against one of the VIP boxes but Cannon moved and Rose flew into the box. Cannon then ran to the other box and jumped from one to the other onto Rose and both guys hit HARD!! They then brawled right behind me. Cannon even tossed a chair onto Rose that just barely missed me. Rose then grabbed the chair, opened the door to the restroom and sandwiched Cannon's head between the chair and the door. They got back into the ring and the fight continued. Cannon then pulled a ladder out from under the ring and set it up in the corner. They then brawled a bit more outside until Cannon did a big run towards Rose who was on the outside and hit a HUGE dive from the ring all the way down the aisle between the chairs on the one side. Both guys were brawling in the back of the room. Rose hit a nasty chair-slam. Then he threw Cannon into the concession stand. When he went to go get him, Cannon flew through the top of the door, feet first and kicked Rose in the face. Cannon threw Rose into the big heater unit thing in the back of the room and then climbed on top of it and dove off onto him. Cannon then threw Rose into the wall several times and it looked as though they were literally trying to break the wall. They then made their way back to the ring and Rose back dropped Cannon onto the ladder and he hit HARD!!! Cannon's whole body was turning red. One of them then set the ladder on the middle turnbuckle and they teased whipping each other into it. In the end, Cannon whipped Rose into it and his back hit very hard! Once Rose got up again, they exchanged stiff kicks, punches and chops. Cannon got under the ring and brought out two chairs. He sat them up in the ring, but Rose got control and then turned them around, back-to-back and dropped Cannon in a sidewalk slam onto the backs of the chairs. It was "Necro Butcher style" nasty-looking too! Cannon still kicked out! Cannon then got control and set the chairs up the other way and then went to the top rope and double-stomped Rose's head between the chairs! Rose kicked out!!! In the end, Cannon went for a 'standing 'rana but Rose caught his legs, and turned him over into a "Lion Tamer" style Boston crab. He then grabbed one of the chairs, put in on the back of Cannon's head with the bar pressing his neck down and then sat on the chair, bending Cannon's body all the way back. Cannon had no choice but to tap out! GOOD GOD, WAS THAT MATCH AWESOME!!!!!!!
After the match, Rose left, but Matt Cage and Alex Castle got into the ring and the three of them all hugged and were very emotional. Cage cut a HUGE promo putting Cannon over as did Castle. Cannon then got on the mic and said that he left the business because he felt it was time to "grow up" but that he wanted to feel like a kid again and be what he wanted to be when he was a kid and basically said that he's coming back to wrestling.
It's amazing that I've driven all over the country to go to wrestling shows and in Olney, IL of all places, I witness a match that is every bit as good, if not better than most matches I've seen in places as far away as Philadelphia. I'd put this one right up there with some of the very best I've ever seen! Sure, I had to sit through some junk to get to this match, but to say this one was worth the $10 is an understatement! It'll be interesting to see where both Cannon and Rose go from here.
